The Moscow Metro Challenge, Bar BQ Cafe and the Amur Tiger
The Bar BQ Café Tigrus Project raises money to help preserve Amur Tigers, a magnificent but endangered species. Better known as Siberian Tigers, these majestic creatures once roamed throughout the Russian Far East, Manchuria, Eastern Mongolia, Siberia as far west as Lake Baikal, and all across the Korean Peninsula. However, by the middle of the 20th century, the Amur Tiger was on the brink of extinction, as a combination of hunting and the destruction of their habitat by war and human development reduced the population to no more than 40. Although numbers recovered after the Soviet Union passed anti-poaching laws in 1947, the Amur Tigers were once again threatened with extinction after the collapse of communism, as deforestation and corruption stripped the tigers of much of their protection from illegal hunting.
More recently, a concerted effort by charities, states and national parks within the Amur Tiger’s range has allowed numbers to recover again. The population of Amur Tigers living in the wild is now stable at about 540. And although they are currently restricted to the Sikhote-Alin range in the Primorsk and Khabarovsk provinces of the Russian Far East, as well as small pockets in the border areas of China, the Amur Tigers represent the largest unfragmented tiger population in the world.
Tigrus, the holding company that operates the Bar BQ Cafe chain, raises money to help the Amur Tiger conservation effort through its Tigrus Project, with special items on BQ menus having a donation built into their cost. Bar BQ café also hosts monthly Tigrus parties during which 1% of everything spent is donated, and it has created a special line of souvenirs and apparel for the project. Since starting the Tigrus Project, BQ has raised over one million roubles for the cause.
The Moscow Metro Challenge is delighted to be raising money for this worthy project. First, BQ will host a special Moscow Metro Challenge Tigrus Party at its Trubnaya bar on the same day as the Moscow Metro Challenge, 10 December 2016. 1% of everything you spend at that event will be donated to the fund. Secondly, you will also be able to donate directly to the fund on that night. Finally, if you can’t make the party, you can sponsor us, rather as you would somebody running a marathon for charity, and we shall pass on the donation in your name on the night itself.
